Comings, Goings and Downtown Sidewalk Rumors!

  • Wesley Campus Ministry has moved into the second floor loft at 157 E. Franklin St.
  • The Waffle House has opened on E. Franklin St.
  • The completion of 140 W. Franklin St. is bringing new business to our downtown.
  • Lime Fresh Mexican Grill has already opened.
  • Gigi’s Cupcakes will be opening soon next to Lime.
  • The Old Chicago Pizza Co. and Taproom are posted as opening later at the corner of Rosemary and Church.
  • Offices for 140 West have moved to 140 with elevator access in the walkthrough.
  • The Eye Care Center will relocate to 140 W. Franklin, just across the street from its current location.
  • Google offices moved into 220 W. Franklin Street.
  • Kipos, a greek restaurant has opened in the Courtyard.
  • 1789, the year the University was founded, has opened as a venture lab above Four Corners on Franklin St.  
  • Offices for the Bicycle development have opened in the Franklin Center by Cosmic Cantina. This will be an information and rental office.
  • The Lantern on W. Franklin Street has opened a beer garden and outdoor dining which will be open until 2 a.m. 6 days a week.
  • Franklin Street Yoga is staying on Franklin Street and locating to the Courtyard on W. Franklin.
  • Al’s Burger Shack is coming to the former site of the Chocolate Door on W. Franklin St. A patio is also being installed next to the building.
  • Sun Trust will also relocate across the street to the former office of the 140 W. Franklin Development also know as the former McFarlands.
  • New signs saying Breathe have begun to appear in our downtown. In very small cursive writing, these announce that Orange County is smoke free.
  • The third floor of Shortbread Lofts is appearing on W. Rosemary St.  Did you know the concrete is being poured in the early morning hours?
  • Solar panels have come to W. Franklin St. at Chapel Hill Tire.
  • Chapel Hill Food Market at the corner of Rosemary and Merritt Mill has closed.
  • A large part of Chapel of the Cross is gone, but soon I their new addition will begin to rise from the ground.
  • Many University Square businesses are closing and reopening in University Mall in preparation for the redevelopment of University Square (but not Granville Towers).
  • Glee Kids, Cynthia's Tailor Shop, Chapel Hill Barber Shop, Kidzu, Peacock Alley and Fine Feathers
  • William Travis Jewelry will have an exterior entrance next to Red Bowl.
  • Ken’s Quickie Mart will be closing.
  • 35 Chinese hasn’t made an announcement yet.
  • Timeout Chicken has had their lease extended through February and hopefully will relocate downtown.
  • Clothes Hound on E. Franklin St. appears to have closed.
  • Carolina Coffee Shop has been closed for the month of July.
  • Trilussa La Trattoria has closed BUT has reopened as Mozzarella
  • And yes, the Massage Parlor next door has closed.
  • Korchipi on E. Franklin St. has closed and then reopened as Chopsticks and More. This is the location of the former Franklin Street Pizza and Pasta.
  • Looks like Hot Dogs has closed and reopened with the name Hummus Café.
  • And star citizen and director of the IFC Shelter, Chris Moran, is retiring.
  • All information and rumors suggest that CVS is coming to the Bank of America Building on the first floor and maybe the lower floor.
  • A new “greek street food” restaurant called Kalamaki will open soon behind Kipos in the Courtyard. Both Kipos and Kalamaki will be owned by Giorgios Bakatsias.
